Abstract:
Calciphylaxis is a rare but severe vascular disorder that disproportionately affects patients undergoing dialysis. In this retrospective study, we used the TriNetX research network to assess the prevalence of calciphylaxis among adult dialysis patients in the United States from 2020 to 2024. Patients were identified using ICD-10 code Z49 for dialysis and E83.59 for calciphylaxis. Overall, prevalence increased steadily over the five-year period, rising from 0.62% in 2020 to 0.94% in 2024. Stratified analyses revealed that prevalence was consistently higher in female patients compared to males, and Black and White patients exhibited greater prevalence than Asian patients throughout the study period. These findings highlight an increasing burden of calciphylaxis in the dialysis population and underscore sex- and race-based disparities that warrant further investigation to inform prevention and early detection efforts.
