Abstract:
Background: Leprosy, also known as Hansen’s disease is a chronic infectious, granulomatous disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis (a newly identified variant), a microorganism that has a predilection for the skin and the nerves. Although rare in developed nation, Hansen’s disease is still a major health burden in developing country like India. Despite control efforts, including the widespread use of MDT and stabilization of reported new case detection rates, leprosy remains endemic in many places in India.
