Abstract:
This study investigates Saudi EFL learners L2 metaphoric language knowledge through a multiple-choice pre-test questionnaire. This questionnaire was re-administered after participants watched the videos containing the same metaphors. Results suggested that learners lack figurative language knowledge, yet when these were exposed in videos a significant improvement was seen through the post-test questionnaire. Results were analyzed in terms of literal and non-literal choices demonstrated in the questionnaire. Also, a contrastive model of six types of metaphors developed by Charteris-Black (2002) was considered in analyzing the poor performances drawn by participants.
