The aim of this research article is to meet 2 objectives. One of the important aims of this research article is to provide information about the historical perspective of English in Sri Lanka. This article also aims to analyze some pedagogical issues and solutions in teaching English in Sri Lankan schools. Since the early 1950s, teaching ESL in Sri Lankan schools irrespective of socio-economic or regional facilities has been a major concern of successive governments of Sri Lanka. As the need of English speaking citizens is felt widely nowadays, the language policy of the Sri Lankan government which further emphasizes the adoption of the effective measures to enhance the quality of teaching still continues.English language teaching and learning styles and strategies are among the main factors that help determine how and how well our students learn a second language. Success of the learning/teaching process largely depends on a set of factors such as students’ motivation, appropriate selection of the teaching approaches, methods, tasks and materials that are mostly determined by students’ psychological characteristics such as learning style and type of intelligence.
