Abstract: Teacher retention in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid counties is conventionally explained by remuneration, infrastructure and insecurity, yet these accounts do not explain why teachers who are neither materially disadvantaged relative to peers elsewhere nor personally exposed to threat nonetheless leave.
