Abstract:
Peritonitis is defined as inflammation of the serous membrane that lines the abdominal cavity and the organs contained therein. Most cases of peritonitis are caused by an invasion of the peritoneal cavity by bacteria, so that when the term peritonitis is used without specification bacterial peritonitis is implied. Peritonitis is one of the most common infections, and an important problem that a surgeon has to face.
