The north western and central region of Tigray Ethiopia (including Shire and Aksum area) was one of the major areas of Ethiopia where ancient civilizations occurred. The study area, being situated in this environment is full of archaeological remains attesting past human achievements and stage of technological developments. Ruins of ancient settlements, center of rituals and religion, cemeteries (mostly rock cut tombs), megaliths and so on are some of the archaeological records found widely distributed in the vicinity of the research areas.
